NA man held on attempted rape charge

Various media outlets and human rights groups have protested an incident in which a Nepal Army man allegedly attempted to rape a media person somewhere at Thamthore forest in the district on Friday evening.

Issuing statements, media organisations, including the local branch of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, Federation of Nepali Indigenous Journalists, Kirat Journalist Association and Rupakot Radio, demanded action against the guilty. They have also warned of stern protests if the guilty is not booked immediately.

Upendra Basnet of Jabarjung Battalion at Mude Barrack reportedly attempted to rape the girl while the latter was on her way to Mude from district headquarters Diktel. The victim said Basnet dragged her around 100 meters down her way and tried to rape her. She said she managed to run away.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Gobinda Kumar Sah said they arrested Basnet on Friday evening and handed him over to the Nepal Army , as the accused is a soldier. He said Basnet has been charged with a case of looting.

Colonel Ram Bahadur Thapa said Basnet seems to have been involved in looting and investigation into the matter has been initiated after taking him into custody. “We started a probe into the case he seems to be involved in looting. We will take action against Basnet under both looting and attempted rape charges if he is found guilty.” Basnet is a permanent resident of Kangel VDC-8 in Solukhumbhu.

Victim's relative Sangita Rai accused concerned authorities of trying to give impunity to the guilty by not charging him with attempted rape .

Meanwhile, preparations are under way to file a case at the District Court in Dolakha against a man who was arrested on the charge of raping his 17-year-old daughter, police said. The 37-year-old man was arrested last week after the victim's mother lodged a complaint against him. The man admitted to the police that he committed the crime.
