Sunkoshi bridge collapses

Parts of the 256 meter long bridge over the Sunkoshi River in Okhaldhunge district collapsed on Monday evening. Around 86 meters of the bridge that linked Okhaldhunga and Udayapur collapsed last midnight.

The reason behind the bridge collapse is yet to be known. Though the government had allocated funds for the bridge construction a decade ago, the construction works started only last year due to bureaucratic hassles.

"We are surprised why the bridge collapsed," said Ramhari Khatiwada, lawmaker from Okhaldhunga-2.

A team of experts led by Deputy Director General at the Department of Road is visiting the site to find out the reasons behind the bridge collapse," said Khatiwada. The government is yet to make an assessment of the loss.
